Biography
Internationally acclaimed Italian Canadian tenor
Manrico Tedeschi, recently returned from Rome
where he was Otello in Teatro dell’Opera di
Roma’s Otello conducted by Riccardo Muti.
Manrico was born in Montreal of Italian parents
and his distinguished career of 20 years has led
him to such famed opera houses as La Scala,
Arena di Verona, l’Opera di Roma, Berlin
Staatsoper, Hungarian State Opera, La Fenice,
Regio di Parma, Opera Marseilles, Regio in
Turin, Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania, Teatro
Massimo in Palermo, Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon,
Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova, Teatro Verdi in
Trieste, Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Politeama
Greco in Lecce, Carnegie Hall, Wexford Festival,
the Berlin Staatsoper, the Berlin Philharmonie
and the Stuttgart Philharmonie, and the Munich
Gasteig among others.
He has sung with such distinguished artists as
Fiorenza Cossotto, Piero Cappuccilli, Carlo
Bergonzi, Elena Obratzova, Giuseppe Giacomini,
Grace Bumbry, Rolando Panerai, Aprile Millo,
Dimitri Hvorotovsky, Cecilia Bartoli, Ruggiero
Raimondi, Lando Bartolini, Alfredo Kraus,
Luciano Pavarotti, Leo Nucci, Silvano Carroli
and Giorgio Zancanaro. His conductors have
included Riccardo Muti, Gianandrea Gavazzeni,
Ghennadij Rhozdestvenskij, Bruno Bartoletti
Alfredo Silipigni, Anton Coppola, Angelo Campori,
Maurizio Arena, Donato Renzetti, Robin
Stapleton, Mario Bernardi, Alain Guingal,
Vladimir Jurovski, Daniele Gatti, Richard
Buckley, Eve Queler, Jan Latham Koenig, Stewart
Kellogg, Enrico de Mori, Patrick Fourniller,
Niksa Bareza, Gabor Otvos, Marco Guidarini,

Studies: He first studied voice with Lina
Narducci at the Montreal Conservatory of Music.
In 1986, he moved to Italy and studied first
with renowned baritone Gino Bechi and then with
Arrigo Pola (Pavarotti’s teacher). Other
teachers have included such legends as Franco
Corelli, Guiseppe Valdengo, Gianni Raimondi and
Carlo Bergonzi. Manrico now coaches with
Canadian tenor Ermanno Mauro.

Career Highlights:
1989 - Debut as Figaro in Barbiere di
Siviglia with Cecilia Bartoli – Teatro Comunale
di Modena. In the same year he participated in
the Jungen Stimmen Gala at the Berlin
Philharmonie with the Berlin Radio Symphony
Orchestra. This concert was recorded and
broadcast on RIAS TV.

Rantzau by Mascagni in Livorno, Esclarmonde by
Massenet in Turin (Pertusi, Pendatchanska),
Trovatore in Cordoba and Santiago de Compostela
opposite Obratzova.
1993- Maestro Riccardo Muti engages him
to sing Canio in Pagliacci at La Scala
alternating with Pavarotti, then he sings
Poliuto in Bergamo with Gianandrea Gavazzeni
conducting, Aida in Padua, then he tours with
Arena di Verona in Hamburg, Kiel, Bielefeld,
Dusseldorf, Bremen, Stuttgart singing Otello and
Trovatore as well as at the Gasteig Philharmonie
Munich directed by Koenig. At Bern Opera he
debuts Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana,
repeating the role in Cagliari opposite Silvano
Carroli.
1994 - Gavazzeni calls him to sing
Pagliacci and Tabarro in Genova, then Carmen in
Pisa, Lucca, Mantua, Bologna, Turin (Mauceri,
Uria Monzon), and at Messina and Opera South
Ireland. He sings a series of concerts in
Ireland at Dublin, Limerick, and Cork.
1995 - He sings Guglielmo Ratcliff by
Mascagni directed by Del Monaco in Livorno
(Mascagni’s hometown), Pisa and Lucca. He
performs La Passione by Malipiero with Teatro La
Fenice in Venice for the 900th Anniversary of
St. Mark’s Cathedral.
1996 - Continuing his great success as a
tenor, Tedeschi performed Trovatore in Savona,
La Spezia and also in a new production in
Madrid. He toured Korea giving concerts and
Master Classes in six different cities.
1997 - He sang Lucia di Lammermoor and
Aida in Bulgaria, Carmen at the Teatro Politeama
Greco in Lecce, and made his American debut in
Tosca at Tampa Opera.
1998 - Then he sang the world premier of
the opera La Lupa by Marco Tutino at the Teatro
Massimo in Palermo, Turandot in Orlando,
Pagliacci in Treviso, Rovigo, and Bassano del
Grappa. He performed Pagliacci in front of 30000
people at the Ahoy Stadium in Rotterdam and at
the Sports Palace in Antwerpen.
1999
- He made his Canadian debut as Cavaradossi
in Opera Lyra's Tosca at the National Arts
Centre in Ottawa.
2000 - He sang the role of Pinkerton in
Madama Butterfly with Orchestra London conducted
by Mario Bernardi, folled by Verdi’s Requiem
with La Société Philharmonique de Montreal,
Carmen at Cork Opera,
2001
- Aida with Operama in Sydney, Canberra in
Australia , Fanciulla del West in Lucca, Pisa,
Bergamo, Ascoli, Livorno , Samson et Dalila at
the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova.
2002
- Adriana Lecouvreur at Teatro Massimo Bellini
in Catania, Tosca in Tokyo and Yokohama (tours
with Teatro Comunale di Bologna) where he
alternates with José Cura, and Il Giuramento by
Mercadante at Wexford Festival in Ireland.
2003 - he made his debut in Otello at
Opera Tampa. With the New Jersey State Opera he
accomplishes the feat of singing both Cavalleria
Rusticana and Pagliacci in the same evening with
great success.
2004
- He reprised his Otello for the Shanghai Opera
in a La Fenice production which is seen on TV by
50 million Chinese. Fanciulla del West follows
with Opera Orchestra New York at Carnegie Hall.
In Prague, he sang Cavalleria Rusticana with Eva
Urbanova and a concert at the Spanish Hall for
the Czech president. He debuted in the role of
Jacopo in Verdi’s I Due Foscari with Lyric Opera
in Dublin.
2005 -
He appeared as Otello at Teatro Sao Carlos in
Lisbon and in December sang a series of Verdi
concerts with the Copenhagen Philharmonic in
Denmark.
2006
- He performed Pagliacci at the Shanghai Opera
and in May he sang Don Alvaro in Forza del
Destino with the Lithuanian Opera in Vilnius. In
December, he recorded a Christmas concert at
Ste. Sixte.
2007 – He performed the Verdi Requiem at
Carnegie Hall for the 50th anniversary of the
death of Toscanini. In April he is in Ottawa for
Opera Lyra’s production of Otello. He reprises
Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana in July and
August at the Settimana Italiana Festival in
Montreal and Sherbrooke. He returns to Italy in
November to sing the opera Marcella by Giordano
in the composer’s hometown Foggia and San Severo.
In December he sings Pollione in Norma at the
Teatro Cilea in Reggio Calabria.
2008 -
In January, he sang Alvaro in Forza del Destino
with Knoxville Opera. May saw him in concert
with the Cairo Symphony in a Puccini concert in
Egypt celebrating the composer’s 150th
anniversary. In September he sang at
Destinatioin Opera Gala with the New Jersey
State opera at the 6000 seat Ocean Grove
Auditorium.
2009 - sees him sing Cavalleria Rusticana
and Mario Lanza Tribute Concerts for Settimana
Italiana in Montreal. Upcoming engagements
include Manrico in Il Trovatore in Bulgaria, Des
Grieux in Manon Lescaut in Austria and Radames
in Aida for Kiel Opera.
